Via an incision behind and paralleling the back of the ear, the bone honey-combed type bone of the mastoid is removed with a drill. The external ear canal and bone overlying the brain cavity are retained.
Miscellaneous
Mastoidectomy is used for both disease treatment and for access to structures of the middle and inner ear. Bone of the mastoid has no function and its removal causes no functional deficit.
